Heritage Arts of NC LLC
Dan Becker, Owner and Managing Principal
I have a life-long commitment to the principles of sustainability. The vision for Heritage Arts is a future where cultural threads are part of the fabric of every person's everyday life. My goal is to assist communities and property owners manage their historic resources into the future — for both community and personal benefit. Heritage Arts was established in 2011 as I transitioned from my role as Executive Director of the Raleigh Historic Districts Commission, Inc., concluding a four-year succession planning effort. The business was incorporated in 2015 when I retired from the City of Raleigh as Planning Manager of the Long Range Planning Division, drawing to a close twenty-nine and a half years of public service in the Raleigh Department of City Planning. |

About Dan Becker
I am currently Owner, Manager, and Consulting Principal of Heritage Arts. Having taken my pension in 2016, I have become a free agent for historic preservation. I am currently assisting the North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office as Hurricane Grants Manager
Prior to moving to Raleigh, I worked as an Associate with James Williamson/Carl Awsumb/Architects in Memphis Tennessee, which provided design services in restoration, rehabilitation, and adaptive use architecture. Previous to that, I served in Sidney, Ohio as Director of the River Corridor Project (a two-county program promoting recreation, conservation, and preservation along the Great Miami River), and as part-time Secretary/Director for the Shelby County Park District.
I completed eight years of service on the Board of Directors for the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions in 2006, including two years as board Chair 2004-2005. I am an ex-officio member of the board for Yates Mill Associates. Past service includes membership on the Center for Preservation Leadership Advisory Board of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I've also been a board member for Mordecai Square Historical Society, Memphis Heritage, and Lowenstein House. I was awarded the 2007 Robert E. Stipe Professional Award by Preservation North Carolina. In 2012, I received the inaugural Daniel L. Becker Professional Award established in my honor by the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions. I regularly present at conferences and conduct training on a variety of preservation topics.
An avid road bicyclist, I reside within Raleigh’s Roanoke Park National Register Historic District with my wife Laura Jean. Our Raleigh Historic Landmark-designated home is a 1926 California-style Arts & Crafts bungalow catalog house that we restored in 1994. Recent acts of stewardship include installation of a closed-loop geothermal heat pump system and the reconditioning and weatherstripping of the original window sash.
I earned a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
